Pumpkin Soda Float… Trick or Treat?

You may feel like you’ve had enough spook for one year. And the thought of wearing another mask isn’t so tempting. But this Halloween trick may just be the best treat yet!

Yes, you heard us correctly, we’re talking about a pumpkin soda float and dare we say it… it may just be better than candy. No need to give your handsanitizer relentless pumps after each knock on your neighbours’ doors – you can keep the kids home (and happy ) with this one.

Here’s what you’ll need:

For the pumpkin spice syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp pumpkin puree (made as you see fit)
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
For the soda
  • Ice-cold soda water freshly sparkled from your BIBO fizz bar
  • Whipped cream
  • Sprinkles or sparkles for topping

Here’s how it’s done:

For the pumpkin spice syrup
  1. Heat the water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the pumpkin puree and the mixed spice to the saucepan and stir until dissolved. But remember do not bring to boil.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. Let it cool for about 20 minutes.
  5. Once cooled, remove sediment by straining the syrup through a fine mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth.
For the soda
  1. Add 30 mls of your freshly made pumpkin syrup to each glass. (You can add more syrup if you’re like us and have a bit of a sweet tooth or less depending on your taste).
  2. Top each glass with  about 180 mls depending on your cups.
  3. Taste to see if you’re happy with the syrup to water ratio and adjust accordingly by either adding more syrup or water.
  4. Top with whipped cream.
  5. Decorate with sprinkles.
  6. Clink glasses and enjoy!

Seven Minutes

“You’re the best mom in the whole world. Even better than Ryder’s mom who once gave us chocolate for lunch.”

If you’re a mom, you’ll know that these compliments don’t always come freely. You’ll understand that competing with chocolate for lunch will often result in failure. And you’ll also understand that competing with chocolate for lunch, albeit tempting, isn’t always the smartest, momsiest choice. 

This compliment was not a result of sugar. This compliment, in fact, was a direct result of simply serving the kids a (healthy), delicious fizzed iced tea. And while we know that seven minutes later she was called a monkey face for not allowing him to play frisbee with her great-grandmother’s china, for those seven minutes, she really did feel like the best mom in the whole world.

It’s been a tough couple of months – and yes we are talking about the pandemic – but more specifically the pandemic at home. New home, who dis?

When a day’s outing consists of moving from the bedroom to the lounge, it’s safe to say that we have officially gotten used to lockdown. 

Over 100 days in (what, only?) and it would seem we all have pretty much settled into some semblance of a corona- life routine. How to do your home/work.

Ah, 2020. The year sports was cancelled. Oh and the year the Coronavirus hit our world, of course. And suddenly we all found ourselves having to make major adjustments in a very short amount of time. One of the said adjustments has been working from home. Suddenly we found ourselves scrambling for office space amidst crayons, scheduling meetings around bath time, and altogether just trying our best not to totally lose it. 

While the benefits of making your home your office speak for themselves, (no fishy smell in the microwave for one) there are certainly a number of factors that make this new normal less than ideal. But the good news is that there are plenty of tips and tricks you can incorporate to make this way of living, and working, well… workable.

Get out of your pyjamas.

Ideally, this getting out of pyjamas would be followed by a shower. But, baby steps. Just wear something other than the clothes you slept in. And do it 3 times a week to start. It’ll make you feel more confident and more professional. Tick.


Get off social media. 

Unless it’s BIBO’s of course. But for reals, we all know how social media is a total and utter time suck. You’ll look up and suddenly it’s night time. So don’t allow yourself to fall into the trap, and reward yourself when you don’t. Ice-cream is nice. 


Have a set workplace.

Prize one is getting your at-home office as close to looking like your real office as possible. Prize two is it not being your bed. Store all your supplies and work paraphernalia here and close the door when you’re done for the day.

Brush up on your communication skills. 

You no longer have the visual cues and easy communication you now know you took for granted. So make sure your communications skills are what they need to be when interacting with people who can’t see you or hear you. Hint: “U” is not a replacement for “you”. 

Once you’ve incorporated some of these easy tips into your new lifestyle, you may even find that working from home could be…fun? More productive? More creative? More freeing? And perhaps even something you’d like to explore further when Coronavirus leaves us (if you’re reading this Corona, you can go now, thanks). But either way, try to make the best of the situation and enjoy the time you have at home. 

After all, when you do go back – the fridge won’t be as close to your office desk.

Is sourdough here to stay?

It’s not often – especially in our adult lives – that we get to say we have a chance to start over. One could argue that when they get married they restarted to some degree although the more cynical would scoff and say you’re the same, but with more laundry.

Well, married or not, we think it’s safe to say that the Coronavirus outbreak has allowed the entire world to start again. As the world went into lockdown, and we were forced to spend weeks and weeks in isolation, show us the person who didn’t pick up a new habit or three, and we’ll show you someone who has been drinking bleach.

For some, it was taking to the streets for some exercise/get away from the family/ see the outdoors/show off their cute new mask. For others (raises hand guiltily) it was to open the fridge door every half hour, just to see if anything new had magically appeared since you’d last checked in. There were those, who changed from one set of pyjamas into their other set of pyjamas, and those who put on suits and ties to differentiate between the weekdays and weekends.

And now, as we begin to emerge from our isolated cocoons, all bleary-eyed and chip crumbs around our mouths, it’s time to decide which of the habits we have picked up over the last few weeks, will be here to stay. Will family dinners now become the norm? Will online zoom webinars be a monthly thing? Will home-workouts, sourdough and other culinary explorations be part of your weekly activities? Will remote working be on your list of asks? And for those really brave souls, maybe even home-schooling? 

How exactly is your new life going to look?

We’ve been given a chance here, a chance to completely take a look at our lives “before” and truly decide what aspects of it we want to keep going forward. We now know which people we need, and which ones we could do without. How to deal with conflict when there’s nowhere to storm. And how to bake banana bread.

Yes, this time has been rough. We have the exposed grey hairs to prove it. And we still aren’t quite sure what our future holds in the next few months going forward. But the one thing we can with utmost certainty is that we have all changed. So as we step warily back into the world, let’s try to ensure it’s a change for the better.

Water does what?!

We get it, ever since you were a tot, drinking water has been drummed into your head alongside “no swimming after eating” so often, that it’s just become background noise. 

So what if we took a different approach? What if we explained to you why drinking pure water is so good for you – and even went as far as to say it’s not for the reasons you think?

Speaking of COVID – it’s safe to say that at this point of Lockdown Day 11367, we’re all going a little dilly. Drinking water can help with that. Dehydration truly affects one’s brain structure and function. And so, when we give our body pure, delicious water – it really helps with thinking and reasoning, two of the things that seem to be amiss during these endless days indoors. 

Self-isolation has gotten us running (well, walking) to the fridge more times than we care to count. And while in moments like these, there’s no judgement – as we’re all in the same boat (well, couch ) drinking water can certainly help. Dehydration can lead to digestive problems, constipation, and an overly acidic stomach, so make sure to drink plenty of your BIBO’s goodness alongside those snacks. 

Times are stressful, and our blood pressure is feeling it. Raise your glasses for our Summer Rosé Sangria

Hello summer. Hello holidays. Hello sparkling rosé sangria.

Whether you’re sitting on the beach, having a dinner party or counting down the seconds until the clock strikes 12, this recipe will have you raising your glasses. All you need is your BIBO fizz bar to get things bubbling and the following ingredients…


  • 2 stone fruit like peaches, nectarines, or plums, sliced
  • 10 strawberries, halved and quartered
  • 2 handfuls of fresh blueberries
  • 60ml castor sugar (optional)
  • crushed ice
  • 750ml Rosè wine
  • Spring of mint

To serve use:

  • A large Jug

BIBO fizz sangria


  • Place all the fruit in the jug
  • Sprinkle with castor sugar (if used)
  • Top the fruit with the crushed ice
  • Fizz the rosé wine using your BIBO fizz bar and pour the sparkling rosé into the jug
  • Add the mint leaves and stir to combine
  • Serve Immediately
  • For some variation, add a few tots of white spirits like gin or vodka

Festive Gin & Cucumber Cooler – Yes Please!

Celebrate the end of year festivities with high spirits. Our gin and cucumber cooler will add a refreshing twist, some extra fizz and a whole lot fun, making all who care to sip on it extra merry. So let the celebrations begin with your BIBO fizz bar. This recipes make 3-4 cocktails. 


  • 1 cucumber, juiced
  • 30ml lime juice
  • 60ml gin
  • 30ml castor sugar
  • crushed ice
  • ice cold sparkling water made with your BIBO fizz bar

To decorate:

  • cucumber ribbons
  • mint
  • slices of lime

Here’s how it’s done:

    • Place the cucumber juice, lime juice, gin and caster sugar in cocktail shaker and shake to mix well
    • Place some crushed ice in glasses and fill up to about two thirds with the cucumber and gin mix
    • Top with a splash of sparkling water
    • Garnish with cucumber, mint or lime and serve immediately

Homemade Peppermint Crisp Float

This one will be sure to keep the boat afloat these school holidays. Our homemade peppermint crisp floats will not only busy the kids, but will make them bubble over with excitement. Bring along your BIBO fizz bar to get the party started. This recipe makes 4 large floats – for plenty and yum fun!

BIBO fizz float


  • 1 litre Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 100g Peppermint Crisp chocolate, broken into small pieces

For the cola syrup you’ll need:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup cold water
  • Pinch of salt
  • Finely grated zest of 2 medium oranges
  • Finely grated zest of 1 lime
  • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 3 star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds, crushed
  • 1 vanilla pod, split
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
  • ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp citric acid

To decorate use:

  • 60ml chocolate sauce
  • 30g finely crushed peppermint crisp

Here’s how it’s done:

  • Slightly soften the ice cream either in a little warm water or by leaving it out for an hour to defrost slightly.
  • Add the roughly chopped peppermint crisp to the softened ice cream and mix well to combine. Place back in the freezer to freeze
  • Make the cola syrup by placing 1 cup sugar in a clean saucepan and let it melt over a medium high heat without stirring
  • Keep a close eye as the sugar starts to melt and gently swirl the saucepan and place back on the heat until all the sugar has melted while swirling regularly to ensure an even melt
  • Keep the caramel on the heat until it has reached a rich amber colour
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the cup of hot water and pinch of salt (it will splutter and spit so please be careful!)
  • Place the saucepan back over the heat and let it simmer and keep stirring until the caramel has melted into the water
  • Once it has melted add the rest of the syrup ingredients and bring to a boil
  • Simmer for 20 minutes until the syrup has thickened, strain and set aside to cool
  • Pour the chocolate sauce in a saucer and spoon the crushed peppermint crisp in another sauce
  • Dip the rims of 4 large glasses first in the sauce and then the crushed chocolate
  • To assemble the floats, prepare the cola by using 1 part cola syrup and 5 parts cold water and fizz using your BIBO fizz bar (you will need approx 500ml – 700ml cola depending on the size of the glasses used)
  • Place 2 or 3 ice cream balls each into the decorated glasses
  • Pour the fizzed cola over the ice cream and serve immediately
  • Store the leftover syrup on the fridge for up to 2 weeks (you can use shop bought cola syrup if you do not want to make your own and prepare the cola as per the instructions of the bought syrup)

Hello Homemade Lemonade

Out with the cold and in with the new. Spring is finally here. Use your BIBO fizz bar to add some extra sparkle to the new season by giving our Homemade Lemonade a go.

Start by stirring up the lemon syrup and top it off by adding some bubbles to the mix. Here’s how it’s done.

For the syrup you’ll need:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • zest and juice of 4 medium large lemons
  • pinch of salt

To serve use:

  • Water
  • Ice
  • Slices of Lemon

  • Use vegetable peeler to zest the lemons and do not remove any of the white pith with the zest
  • Make the syrup by placing the sugar, water and zest in a saucepan
  • Bring it all to the boil while stirring and stir until the sugar has dissolved
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice and salt
  • Cover and let the syrup stand for a few hours to infuse and come to room temperature
  • Pour through a sieve to remove the lemon peel.
  • Add ½ cup of the syrup to 2 ½ cups of water and mix
  • Taste and add more syrup or sugar to taste (if needed)
  • Carbonate in the Bibo fizz bar
  • Serve with ice and garnished with lots of slices of lemon
  • The rest of the syrup can be stored refrigerated for up to a month
