From the nomads to the homebodies: Water filtration ideas for you

With wine comes laughter, with tequila comes dancing, and with water comes…bacteria.  Sorry to burst the proverbial water bubble, but it’s true. The water around us is swimming with nasties, and so it’s pretty vital we know about it.

For those of you who backpack, hike or camp outdoors, you’ll know that taking liters of water along with you, is practically impossible. You simply cannot carry the amount of water you’ll need while exploring the great outdoors.

So it’s pretty important to understand how to find water and how to make that water work for you:

When you’re away from city life and don’t have access to clean and filtered water, always know in which direction a water source can be found. One way of doing this is by animals. Animals don’t tend to stray too far away from water sources, so if there’s wildlife around, there’s a good chance there’s water nearby too. Next, water flows downhill, so if you’re upstream, start making your way down and you should be good to go.

Once you’ve found your water, (great job by the way), you need to filter it and make sure it’s safe to consume. The best way to do this is by pre-filtering and boiling it.

If you see murky little bits floating around in there, simply grab a pair of pantyhose, clean socks, or a coffee filter, and do a quick sift. It may not clear it completely, but it should do a pretty good job.

Next comes boiling: an aged-old, but tried and trusted method of ensuring your water is safe to drink. Simply bring your water to a rolling boil for about a minute and boom–you’ve got purified water with no bacteria, no protozoa, and no viruses.

Don’t forget: If you’re at higher altitudes, you need to boil your water longer to effectively kill everything in it. Basically, if you’re above 6,500 feet you should boil it for at least 3 minutes.

Pretty simple huh?

But do you know what’s even simpler? Staying at home and getting yourself a BIBO bar that does all the water filtering for you–and then some.
